(I work Sat-Wed at the moment)
Outside today the Thunderbirds were tearing up the sky.
At one point I clearly saw a formation of three within view from my backyard - so I ran inside to get my camera, and they never came that close again. On one pass of a single jet, it nearly broke the sound barrier - I was waiting for the BOOM that never came.
It was so glorious out that I spent a fair amount of the afternoon-evening on the deck and around the backyard puttering. I still should be digging up sod for the new beds, but after doing a small patch yesterday, my right knee and shoulder were a bit sore. The knee probably due to playing another all out game on Tuesday night as well. Under the kneecap has been a bit stabby of late.
I also decided to try again to Google the birds that had moved into my birdhouse - although they seemed to have moved out (already? that seemed a fast incubation/new hatches to fledgling stage if so) and found they were common House Wrens. On the site I found a tab marked sounds and played them to be sure that they were the same birds. OMG! Were they ever. As soon as I played the sounds - momma bird came flitting all around the deck, flapping/fluffing and singing the same songs! It was funny, and yet so cool, but then I felt like such a tease - thinking, "She's probably getting all hot for a male the way she was carrying on - unless it was a he looking for a female? Hard to tell for sure - but of course I had to do it a few more times to see the reaction and have a laugh.
Then my old pals the Black Capped Chickadees came around, so naturally I found their page and played their songs and calls to see their reaction - oh yes, it was very positive - positively funny and again, so very cool. I set out treats for both the Wrens and the Chickadees, then, for shits n giggles, checked out the Crow page...you guessed it; more of the same.
Next time I am going to have to search through the hawks & falcons and whatnot to find those screeching birds that have inhabited this area and fly around screaming at all hours into the night as well as early morning. I reckon they only sleep a few hours at most before they start in with that insipid noise again as they chase about the neighbourhood.
Later some music kicked up that sounded as if it was coming from Chester Bowl, so I decided to have a walk up there and check out the band, figuring it was from one of the Tuesday night Music in the Park rain-outs. Once I got there, there was no band, yet the music seemed to be coming from beyond. St Scholastica I guessed - must be some outdoor concert or? So I walked back home checking out all the neighbourhood gardens and flower beds on my way - getting some new ideas as well for my own yard.
Rounding the corner from the soccer fields to the ski hill, there were the four girls I had noticed coming in who had been carrying large blocks of ice as they all poured out of a truck. Hmm. What sort of college experiment was going on in the ponds with all that ice? Well I had my answer as I walked and they marched up the ski hill, then sad down on their blocks and rode them down the hill laughing and carrying on. Fun & Silly and four friends having fun on a Friday night. Right above them was the moon too. Again, my pics don't capture it all that well as I had forgotten to wear my glasses and really couldn't see what I was photographing very clearly.
After I arrived home, I was still curious to find the source of the music, so I hopped in the beast and drove up College St to St Scholastica. The message board outside the entrance didn't say anything about a concert, but I drove in anyway. Once there, there were other signs welcoming the Relay for Life participants and then all the tents and course came into view.
I wished I didn't have to work tomorrow, and I would have joined them walking into the night. It looked pretty fun - maybe next year if I am still here.
So there you have it - not the most exciting Friday night, but quite the variety for sure. What can I say, I am easily amused.
