Amante de Sol

"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio."........................................................... ~Hunter S. Backyard Project

After some of the morning and part of the afternoon watching el copa mundial (Germany vs Serbia, Slovenia vs USA, and Engerland vs Algeria, I had to get my butt outside in the gorgeous sunny weather (albeit a bit windy *understatement* for my liking) and dig in the dirt.

I'm digging up the old path blocks as they've become slowly covered over by grass, and when it rains they fill with water making it useless to walk on them to keep your shoes any drier than walking on the grass.I hadn't realised how big they really were. I am guessing they were quick setting cement poured in place in forms, as they are for the most part uniform in size, but the bottoms are all wonky (like aggregate stone and uneven) and not nice flat surfaces. They aren't perfectly square either, but are all approximately 17/18 x 18 in size. Good enough for stepping stones through my new beds or as a path way. I keep changing around the layout and leave them on the grass to help kill it and the weeds (dandelion, clover and some broad-leafed buggars mainly) underneath.
I also have many red Purington Paver bricks from the old Canal Park Inn that I grabbed years ago before they closed and it was demolished for the new hotel, which I've decided to use as border in keeping with the other beds I've created in my yard. They are handy when sunken to grass level, so you can run the lawn mower wheels right on them for a close to the brick cut.Bricks outlining my strawberry bed. (yes, I need to edge them as grass has been growing over the tops of them as well)

I have a large patch of them in the very back where I park my car, as that used to be such a muddy area when it rained or melted, to unload groceries and such. I made a large 'unloading area' rectangle, which has also become overgrown with grass and weeds. I am thinking of pulling all of those out, and using the grass that I dig up, to patch in that area so the driveway doesn't slope so much into the backyard. Or not. I at least want to make them visible again, so the backyard looks a little better, and maybe has more appeal when I try to sell this barn.
A close up view of the current layout. The grassy triangle area on the left (top) will all be dug up and become vegetable beds, along with the triangle area on the right.Aerial view from an upstairs window of the old path and work I've begun. Eventually, the flowers and vegetable beds will reach all the way to where the sidewalk ends and connect into the existing perennial beds along the fence, eliminating the need to mow along that area anymore.

At the base of the fort's fireman pole, I plan to put down mulch for now so I don't have to mow around it anymore, and to provide a soft landing for any future pretend fire people. I've laid a few of the bags of topsoil and mulch there to kill the grass and weeds in preparation for that part of the project. I also need to rebuild my compost area as well, as the bin itself is disintegrating, and I want it located at the end of the fence, so I can use more of that area that stays sunny for flowers or vegetables.

After three hours of work, it was time to go watch the Twins play the Phillies (L 9-5) as my son was at the game with some of his friends. They drove out last night and are going to all three games, returning Monday. Here's hoping that their "Circle Me Bert" sign gets circled and they have a great time!

Ok, that's all for today.
Time for a movie and bed.

Cheers!
