Today I have off from my gov't job.
Worked Sunday, and since they've decided to end the help desk night and weekend hours, I went back to days on 1 June. We're only allowed to work 40 hrs per week, no more so I picked hump-day for my day of freedom. Then management was directed from above to also end the help desk altogether this Friday, so it will just be the manager and myself for a time. A week? Maybe two? Who knows. The good thing is, is that our office manager approached me on Monday and asked me if I will willing to stay, in some capacity, and then said, "We'll find a place for you." How nice! I had heard something similar from my manager, but, ya know it just doesn't carry the same weight as to hear it from the top gun. So I am somewhat a bit relieved that my temporary service isn't quite ending as of yet.
When we accepted our posts, we all were aware that this was a temporary gig. For as little as days (if you didn't catch on/pan out) or for eight week intervals of renewal(mine came in the mail yesterday as a matter of fact), for as much as a year or two tops until the whole works folded up shop til 2018 comes round. It is hard in some ways to see people leave, some I'll miss, some...well, you know. But we all took on the positions knowing that it was just temporary. The one consolation is is that they can be called back for work later in the process, as if you weren't fired you are termed as 'eligible for rehire' and 'experienced' so that's a plus for many. I've also mentioned to many to have a look about on the Federal job site as they are already 'in' being as they've successfully worked and been all checked out (background/fingerprints etc.) and they might just find a better full time fit elsewhere in a field they've already worked in - or something new.
Just the other night on our nightly news they had a report about this very site and how there are thousands of jobs for hire. It was featuring the fact that many students were graduating, but also that these jobs aren't limited to graduates, but to anyone looking, who wants to apply.
Government jobs are one of the employment areas that don't go away, like health care and teaching. There is always a need, in many various categories and positions as well as levels within those areas for people to fit into. Maybe you?
In the meantime, today I am at my other part time job for a look through the mail, working on a few little projects online and in the databases to update.
I also got to have lunch with a girlfriend for the first time in a couple of months - which was very nice. She's like a sister to me. Always good to catch up with her.
It's gorgeous outside today as well, so I don't plan on being here all day and want to get out and take advantage of a mid afternoon off. The meteorologist said we get today and tomorrow before it turns to crap again. Ye-ha!
UPDATE
I ended up taking an extended bus ride to catch up with a friend, and also caught up with a couple of others as well who came on along the way. Learned some new things, saw some parts of town I never have been through and some beautiful views on one route along the skyline parkway. Had the best time in the best company of one of my bestest favourite drivers too! He really is a great guy. How nice is it when your driver thanks you for a chat and riding along their route. I am truly lucky to have gotten to know him beyond just being the 'driver'.
Later, since it was so nice out, I decided to take a walk for a good part of my way home, until another bus came along to take me the rest of the way (It would have taken me another 40-45 min beyond the 30 or so I had already walked, and I really had to pee. lol) so I hopped it to expedite my return home.
After muckin about in the yard some, I sat in the evening sun on the deck enjoying a beer and some leftover pizza and my book; smelling bbq's and hearing neighbours behind me having some sort of gathering, as well as birds playing at my feeders.
To top it all, a call from a friend as he said he would. We talked for over an hour, which made for a wonderful, yet a bittersweet end to my day. I wish I could give him a BIG HUG and tell him it will all work out - I told him so, but it's not the same as giving someone one when they really need it. And he needs it. Big hugs bub!
*Sigh*
I am drained from happiness and sunshine.
My bed is calling.
Peace.
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio."........................................................... ~Hunter S.
